1st Jaime Colson Exhibition in Ottawa (Museo Bellapart)

Presented by the Dominican Republic Embassy.  May 4th to June 18, 2006
City of Ottawa, Main exhibition hall, 111 Sussex Drive. Selected masterworks.

Jaime Colson was born in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic in 1901 and died in Santo Domingo in 1975.  He studied painting in the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. He also studied in Barcelona , where he furthered  drawing studies with the Catalan masters of the beginning of the century.  Settled  in Paris in the 1920’s, where under the influence of Ingres, Picasso, Braque, and Léger, his paintings took a markedly cubist turn. During this period, he produced geometric architectural works ; however, despite special  influences of the times, his character – his essence – prevails in all of his paintings. The incorporation of drawing, the balance of his compositions with repeated interest in the human figure, as well as the neatness of his forms reveal the great intensity of his character and creativity.
