DEATH OF A DOMINICAN

Making arrangements after the death of a Dominican citizen:

When a Dominican dies abroad without next of kin present, a consular officer notifies his/her family and informs them about options and costs for disposition of the remains. Costs for preparing and returning a body to the Dominican Republic may be high and must be paid by the family.

Documents to be presented from the funeral home for the return of bodies to the DR should be translated into Spanish and legalized by the nearest consulate. These are:

bullet Death certificate. The signature of the city registrar should be ratified by a superior officer.

bullet Sworn declaration of embalming, signed by the embalmer and notarized. The signature of the notary public should be certified by the county clerk.

bullet Letter from the Department of Health of the state, ratified by the superior officer declaring the body is free from an epidemic or contagious sickness.

bullet Notary Services are available for a fee of US$75 for each notarial.
