When
Christopher Colum-
bus discovered the island, it was inhabited by an indigenous race know as
the Tainos. The latter had inhabited the island since 800
A.D.
and led a simple
sedentary lifestyle rich in agriculture and religious tradition. The
culture they developed was the richest in the Caribbean area. Examples

On the 28th of June of 2000 the Secretary of State of Culture was created
through the law 41-00 as the superior
institution, responsible of the execution of the policies, programs and
projects for the cultural development. The meaning and reach of the
dispositions contained in law 41-00 where conceived not only with the
objective of creating the Secretary of State of Culture but with the
establishment of a National System of Culture, with the understanding that
